Meet Dakota: A Story of Clubfoot, Resilience, and Hope

A story of resilience, hope, and finding strength one step at a time.
Every parent dreams about the day they'll finally meet their baby. For Dakota's family, that excitement was accompanied by uncertainty.
Before she was even born, routine ultrasounds began raising concerns. Specialists closely monitored her throughout the pregnancy after noticing possible abnormalities with her feet, head, and heart. While her parents hoped the findings would prove less serious than expected, they also began preparing themselves for the unknown.
When Dakota arrived at just 34 weeks, those questions finally had answers.
She was diagnosed with bilateral clubfoot, bicuspid aortic valve, and microcephaly-three diagnoses that would shape the beginning of her life and introduce her family to a world of specialists, hospital visits, and ongoing medical care.
Finding Hope in Small Victories
The first months of Dakota's life were filled with appointments and treatment plans.
In November 2019, she began serial casting, a process that gently corrects the position of her feet through a series of casts changed over several weeks. Then, in January 2020, she underwent a tenotomy, a procedure commonly performed to improve mobility for children born with clubfoot. Just weeks later, she was fitted for boots and bar braces.
For the next three months, Dakota would wear them 23 hours a day. After that, she would continue wearing them every night until she was around four years old- a commitment that would help give her the best chance at walking, running, and playing alongside other children. Amid all the challenges, her family also received wonderful news.
During a follow-up appointment in January, Dakota's cardiologist confirmed that her heart was clear. After months of uncertainty, it was a moment of relief they desperately needed. There were still questions surrounding her diagnosis of microcephaly, and another MRI with a neurologist would be waiting as she approached her first birthday. But for that moment, they celebrated one piece of good news.
Sometimes hope comes one appointment at a time.
The Cost of Caring for a Child
Like so many families navigating a child's medical journey, Dakota's parents quickly realized that the emotional challenges were only part of the story.
The financial reality arrived just as quickly.
Since October 2019, Dakota's mom had stepped away from work so she could be home caring for her daughter and taking her to appointments. Her husband became the family's sole income while medical bills continued to grow. Returning to work wasn't a simple solution.
Because Dakota needed her braces throughout the day, daycare wasn't an option. Instead, both parents planned to work part-time so they could continue caring for her while maintaining the health insurance their family depended on.
It was a difficult balancing act trying to provide financially while making sure Dakota received the care she needed. Like many medically underinsured families, they weren't looking for someone else to solve all of their problems.
They were simply hoping for enough support to get through one of the hardest seasons of their lives.
How The B.A.B.Y. Foundation Helped
When medical expenses begin to pile up, families are often forced to make impossible decisions.
How do you pay the next hospital bill while reducing work hours to care for your child?
How do you stay present during appointments while worrying about finances waiting at home?
This is the gap The B.A.B.Y. Foundation was created to fill.
By providing financial assistance to medically underinsured families across Northern Colorado, The B.A.B.Y. Foundation helps relieve some of the burden that insurance simply doesn't cover.
For Dakota's family, that support meant the opportunity to catch their breath financially while continuing to prioritize her care and recovery.
Because every parent deserves the chance to focus on helping their child heal, not wondering how they'll pay the next bill.
One Step at a Time
Today, Dakota continues to make progress with the same determination she's shown from the very beginning. Her family is grateful they no longer have to make weekly trips to Denver, and every milestone feels a little sweeter because of everything they've overcome together.
Her journey reminds us that healing isn't always measured in giant leaps.
Sometimes it's found in a successful surgery.
A clear cardiology appointment.
One less trip to the hospital.
Or simply watching your child grow stronger with each passing day.
Those moments matter.
And they're worth celebrating.
