Some children leave an impact so powerful, so unforgettable, that their presence continues to glow long after they’re gone. For the family of Wyatt Cade Dillon, that glow is something they feel every single day.
Wyatt’s smile, full of innocence and mischief, lit up rooms across Loveland, Colorado, for a little more than three years. Born on October 16, 2002, Wyatt entered the world with a joy that made everyone around him feel lighter — even as his tiny heart fought battles far bigger than he ever should have faced.
A Diagnosis That Changed Everything
Shortly after he was born, Wyatt was diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, a rare and severe congenital condition where the left side of the heart is critically underdeveloped. His family’s world shifted in an instant. At just six months old, Wyatt underwent what would become the defining event of his short life: a heart transplant.
For a time, the new heart gave him what every parent dreams of for their child — a chance. A chance to laugh, to play, to explore the world he loved so much. His grandfather, Jay Dickson, remembers it clearly:
“He could light up the room just by his smile.”
It wasn’t just his smile that left a mark. It was who he was — energetic, wise beyond his years, loving, caring, and endlessly giving. Wyatt lived every moment like he knew it mattered. Like he understood his time was precious.
“He lived every single moment like he knew he wasn’t going to be here very long. He made everybody around him live the same way,” Jay said.
Loss Felt in Every Heartbeat
On January 21, 2006, just months after celebrating his third birthday, Wyatt’s little body rejected his transplanted heart. After a week-long stay at Children’s Hospital — a week that cost the family more than $800,000 — Wyatt passed away.
Grief like that doesn’t fade. It reshapes you.
Jay shared what so many grieving families feel:
“Every time I go home at night I miss him… little things you hear on the radio or things you see trigger it.”
His family lived through every high, every low, every ounce of hope and fear. And through it all, Wyatt remained aware — aware of his body, aware of his challenges, and aware that there was something extraordinary about him.
A Legacy of Courage, Joy, and Unwavering Love
Wyatt’s life inspired something beautiful — something that continues to honor him and support families just like his.
Each year, The B.A.B.Y. Foundation presents the Wyatt Memorial Award, created to honor children who embody the same qualities Wyatt showed every day:
Courage
Resilience
Joy
Determination
Perseverance
These aren’t just words. They’re traits families develop when navigating a child’s medical journey — traits Wyatt carried with grace far beyond his years. The award stands as a tribute to his spirit and a reminder of the love and strength that endure even in the hardest circumstances. In Wyatt’s honor, the award is presented to a child and family who exemplify these same remarkable qualities. It’s a way of saying:
“Your courage matters. Your fight is seen. Your love is felt.”
A Message We Carry Forward
Wyatt’s story is heartbreaking — but it’s also full of hope, generosity, and purpose. His life continues to light the way for families walking similar paths, reminding us why The B.A.B.Y. Foundation exists.
We step in during the moments no family should face alone — when medical bills feel impossible, when fear overshadows joy, when hope needs a hand to hold.
Wyatt taught the world what a brave heart looks like. And through the Wyatt Memorial Award, his legacy continues to shine in every family we support.
